about

French Gabonese producer and DJ Banga delivers her debut album Obaka bringing together her fundamental music influences between Nigeria, Angola and Brazil. She uses percussion as a bridge between different cultures that have contributed shaping the person she is today

Obaka is the name of a wooden instrument from Gabon, a double-face percussion whose symbolism is close to Yin & Yang. In a desire to keep an organic feel in the instruments, this album revolves around a work on sound textures, Banga has an ear for finding similarities in sounds from different countries.
She composed the 8 titles on DAW with laptop, keyboards and MPC while her drum patterns share something common with forest instrument from Gabon, Brazilian samba, and Angolan Kuduro she also plays digital harp in the way of Brazilian Berimbau and Mougongo from her mother country Gabon.

On the title Ngonde we can hear the traditional Obaka sampled and replayed between sinuous trap basses. We find on Obaka, a song that has 120 instrument layers and Nzinga an uptempo collab with Paris based DJ & producer Mr Meyz (Les Kolons)

In an era where music is going digital and afro electronic genres are evolving the idea of this introduction album for Banga is to think about rematerializing music by giving instruments a live dimension and adding some vocals to keep the beauty of tradition.

Like the chapters of a book each piece has its own atmosphere there is an intro and an end. For her the art of celebration is important to humanity because it’s a relief, Obaka is a journey towards peace and balance.
